TUMPAT: The upgrading of Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (LTSIP) in the Pengkalan Chepa in Kota Bharu is expected to start in 2020, involving an allocation of RM500 million.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar said the project which will be implemented at the existing site includes the construction of a two-storey building for departure and arrival terminals which complies with international aviation regulations, and expected to be completed within three years.
He said the upgrading of the LTSIP was to accommodate the increasing number of passengers each year, as well as providing a safer and more comfortable environment.
"The new LTSIP will be able to accommodate about four million passengers a year, compared to two million a year currently," he said after the groundbreaking ceremony for the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Tumpat Railway Station and Depot here today, which was also attended by KTMB Procurement Manager Mohd Hider Yusoff.
The new RM23.7 million KTMB Tumpat station and depot is expected to be completed by 2020.
