Kota Bharu's Sultan Ismail Petra Airport to be expanded

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) general manager Datuk Badlisham Ghazali says the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport is scheduled to undergo expansion works and had requested for RM500 million allocation from the Federal Government.
KOTA BHARU: The Sultan Ismail Petra Airport will be expanded under the 11th Malaysia Plan to accommodate more passengers and aircraft

Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd (MAHB) general manager Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said it has requested an allocation of RM500 million from the Federal Government for the purpose.

"The airport terminal has a capacity of 1.5 million passengers annually, but it is presently handling more than two million people.

It currently handles 70 landings and departures daily and forecast to handle four million people.

"The six parking bays will be doubled to 12 while the runway will be lengthened slightly by 100 metres; this is still under discussion," he told reporters after a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme here today.

Asked when the project will start, Badlisham said MAHB is waiting for the 2017 Budget in October.

"This project is one of our priorities. The design has been discussed and we are waiting for the allocation from the Federal Government," he said.
