Liow: Transport Ministry will step in over AirAsia’s relocation at Sabah airport

SHAH ALAM: The Transport Ministry will intervene over AirAsia Bhd's relocation dispute at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) should the matter not reach a conclusion, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic).

He said the low-cost carrier's relocation to Terminal 1 from Terminal 2 at KKIA was long overdue and needed to be resolved soon between AirAsia and the airport's operator, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

"Paramount importance is the convenience of travellers and passengers and also the nation's interest is at stake," he told a news conference after opening the Nissan 4S Centre in Glenmarie on Wednesday.

Liow was commenting on a statement by AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes today that the company was sticking to its decision not to move to KKIA Terminal 1, despite a ministerial order to do so.

Fernandes said moving to Terminal 1 from Terminal 2 would create heavy congestion at the airport while the airport tax, which would be increased by RM35, could kill Sabah's tourism industry.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said yesterday all airline companies, including AirAsia, must move to KKIA Terminal 1 to accommodate more passengers, both domestic and international.
