KUALA LUMPUR: The Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) train service between Tumpat and Kemubu in Kelantan will resume from Aug 31 after being stalled due to the massive flood that hit the area last December.
KTMB president, Lt Col (Rtd) Sarbini Tijan said the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) had given approval for the rail track to be reopened after being satisfied with the safety aspect.
“However, we (KTMB) are not able to operate fully yet as repair works on bridges in the Kemubu area are still ongoing,” he told reporters after launching the “Sehati Sejiwa” Count and Win Contest, at Kuala Lumpur Sentral, here, today.
All the East Coast train services were out since last Dec 22 due to the massive flood late last year.
However, on July 12, the train service between Kemubu and Kuala Krai in Kelantan resumed and between Gemas in Negri Sembilan and Gua Musang, on July 13.
Sarbini also said that in consideration of consumers, KTMB would not raise its train fares in the near future although there had been plans to do so.
According to him, currently, about 70 per cent of KTMB passengers comprised women while 45 per cent were foreigners.
Meanwhile, the “Sehati Sejiwa” Count and Win Contest, organised by KTMB in conjunction with the National Day 2015 celebration, is aimed at fostering patriotism among its passengers. The contest which runs from today until Sept 22, is open to all Malaysian citizens.
